Varanasi, also known as Kashi, is celebrated as the oldest living city in the world. It’s a place where ancient traditions seamlessly blend with modernity.  It was one of the first major urban settlements in the middle Ganges valley. Varanasi is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus, who come to bathe in the holy river. Known as the City of Temples and a beacon of culture, Varanasi has produced many renowned writers. It’s also a centre of silk weaving, so practise haggling at the chaotic bazaar for some beautiful souvenirs. Believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva, Varanasi is among the seven sacred cities in the country. Varanasi is also one of the holiest sites of Buddhism, as it was in Sarnath, which is located merely 12 km away, that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. Jain literature, too, refers to Kashi as a holy city, as it is the birthplace of four Jain tirthankaras (saints). It is said that Kabir, a 15th-century mystic poet and saint, was also born in this city.
